The most popular brands are often so, because they are readily available. That left me wondering : are popular brands (you know which ones I'm talking about!) the best brands?

To get some answers, I had our marketing expert reach out to 14 industry experts with practical knowledge of gun safe brands and who have plenty of experience in owning and storing firearms and dealing with potential security issues.

If I were to guess, I'd expect brands like Browning Prosteel, Graffunder, and Liberty to rank pretty high. Instead I was surprised at the findings.

Vaultek is a gun safe company that stands out to me today. Their line of quick access biometric safes is one of the best. Their safes are innovative, and their quality is top notch.*

Take the Lifepod for example. This portable safe can be used virtually anywhere. It is TSA approved, and even floats. I like it because it has a security cable that I can attach to the seat of my car when traveling. Flying to a range or training course with my handgun is super easy with this safe.

Vaultek’s larger biometric safes allow me to have quick access to my handguns at home. I have owned a VTi Handgun safe for over 5 years now and it still works great today. Most people complain about the reliability of biometric scanners, but I find that mine opens on the first try more than 95% of the time. I use it everyday and can’t remember the last time it didn’t open on the first try.

They are also one of the few companies that have quick access safes for home defense rifles and shotguns. Again, something you couldn’t find on the market 10 years ago.

For larger safes, I like Stealth Safes. What sets them apart is their internal power strip and their Molle door organizer.

The internal power strip is something that is often found in higher priced safes. It is great for powering a light or a dehumidifier. I find that most people underestimate how dark the inside of a safe can be.

I really like the Molle door organizer. I can move the pouches around where I want them and attach other pouches of my own if I wish. More expensive safes usually don't offer this and have permanently attached pouches that can't be moved or changed.

The best gun safe for you will largely depend on your needs. I want a safe that offers sufficient fire protection, is hard to break into, and has an AC power outlet for a dehumidifier and lights in the safe.

I look for safes that are fire rated up to 120 minutes and have had their fire ratings independently tested. I also look for safes that have burglary ratings from independent labs.

I find that humidity is a big problem for me because I keep my gun safe in a basement, and the portable, battery powered dehumidifiers just don’t do the job.

So, having the ability to plug in a dehumidifier into an AC unit is important for me when selecting a safe. It also lets me plug lights in so I’m not digging for my guns in the dark. If a safe doesn’t have this option, I’ll pass.
